Dr. Hermann Haus, MIT
I was a post-doc student of Charlie Townes, and I learned everything I know about quantum electronics from Charlie. I entered the laser field because it does have a lower limit on the noise performance of amplifiers, and Tony Siegman, who might be in the audience tonight, felt the same way. We entered the field at the same time, so our first papers were actually written on the noise of the "optical maser." That's one thing that Charlie Townes would have liked the laser to be called, an optical maser. On this one, he didn't win. It's called the laser. So, anyway, Charlie, congratulations on your fantastic accomplishment. [more] Speakers in this Section |
